The latest addition to our collection of Ole Hickory CTO’s is “Wic”. I bought this when I cooked a contest in Florida earlier this winter. We plan to use this trailer-mounted CTO for on-site catering as well as for extra capacity. We’ll probably also use this for competitions that are far enough away that taking the 5th wheel would be too expensive.
Follow us as we travel to the heart of Texas for the National Barbeque Association Conference and Expo in Austin, Texas. The suitcases are packed, our presentations are as ready as they’ll ever be and we’re headed to Texas – via O’Hare…..(hopefully there’s enough time for two out of shape BBQ’ers to make the connection).
The itinerary shapes up like this:
Monday — we travel, hook up with friends and get into a Texas state of mind;
Tuesday – Bus tour of legendary BBQ joints off the beaten path;
Wednesday – Bus tour of famous BBQ joints in the Austin Area;
At the National BBQ Association I had the pleasure of meeting Dave Anderson, of “Famous Dave’s BBQ” Dave is the founder and guiding force behind the 176 location chain with locations across the US. Dave is a very nice guy and has a true passion for BBQ.
We made it to Austin,TX to the National BBQ Association meeting. We met up with Ruben and Bonnie Gomez from New Mexico that helped us at the 17th Street BBQ contest in Murphysboro,IL The introduced us to several new BBQ people and some with some real interesting stories.
We are really happy that Twyford BBQ and Catering now has their signature sauce available for sale in both Mild and Sassy formulas. Enjoy the sauce that graces our table and brings our customers back for more. Our sauce is the perfect blend of sweetness and tangy flavor with just a touch of heat in our Mild formula or a bolder Sassy formula. Let our sauce take your food to the next level. It will soon be available at a retail outlet. But until then you can order it from us by sending an email and the cost is $5.00 per bottle plus shipping. If you are local we can hook up and save you the shipping cost.
The Capitol City Cook-off was held April 17th, 2009 in Jefferson City, MO. If you wanted to get a taste of what tough competition was, Jeff City was the place to be. The field of 55 teams included Munchin Hogs at the Hilton, the 2008 Kansas City Barbecue Society Team of the Year, as well as 54 other excellent teams that included American Royal winners, Jack Daniels Invitational competitors and winners, and top ranked KCBS teams. There was nice weather for the contest and that made things even more enjoyable.
The Second annual Kick-Off Cook-Off was held at Cabela’s at St. Louis Mills and was a great success. Greg and other members of the Optimist Club did a great job with 36 teams competing. This year they supplied great electricity and it is a real nice contest. Out of the 36 teams we place 3rd overall with a 1st place in pork and 3rd in brisket. Followed up with a 13th in chicken and 15th in ribs. But we were real happy with both the contest and our placing at the Kick-Off Cook-Off.
We have the trailer loaded and ready to leave for Wamac, IL that will be today and Saturday. We competed in this contest last year and got reserve champion. I hope we can do as good if not better than last year. Will keep you posted.
